Hercules had met all established remedial action objectives at the 009 Landfill as of 1999. Thanks to the success of Hercules’ remediation, a portion of the site is currently being reused by a neighboring car dealership.

Hercules stabilized more than 100,000 yards of soil and sludge; capped the 7-acre historical landfill; and continues to monitor both groundwater and the cap to ensure the effectiveness of the remedy. When the landfill was paved to create a staging area for a local auto dealership, another layer of protection was added to the cap.

Hercules’ remediation work at the 009 Landfill was awarded certification by the Wildlife Habitat Council’s “Wildlife at Work” program in 2015 for increasing biological diversity at the closed landfill. The southern pond area is now designated as conservation habitat. While birds, turtles and other local wildlife enjoy cover boards and basking logs around the perimeter of a large pond, game cameras monitor their activities and numbers.

In 2022, Hercules voluntarily performed a further refined site characterization through the installation of additional groundwater monitoring wells. In an effort to enhance the future protectiveness of the established monitored natural attenuation remedy for groundwater impacts at the site. Hercules worked with EPA and EPD in the summer of 2022 to inject aquifer amendments along the eastern, down-gradient boundary of the landfill. The amendments successfully reduced benzene concentrations in several monitoring wells. Groundwater monitoring to evaluate how well the amendments accelerate natural attenuation of impacted groundwater remains ongoing.

In 2025, Hercules adjusted the monitoring well network to support the neighboring property, relocating some of the groundwater monitoring network to accommodate their new construction. Environmental covenants on the neighboring property requires that environmental controls remain in place to protect the new structures.

Hercules’ restored habitats at both the 009 Landfill and the Brunswick facility are certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC). The enhanced wetland habitat at 009 Landfill supports a variety of birds and reptiles. Both sites have bird nesting boxes and wildflower fields, providing habitat for birds, butterflies, and other pollinators.
